چکیده
753 August 2016, Vol. 106, No. 8 Spasticity is defined as an increase in muscle tone that is elicited by a velocity-dependent stretching of the muscles. It is part of the upper motor neuron syndrome of muscle weakness and is worst in antigravity muscles.[1,2] The most common causes of spasticity are: • cerebral palsy (spasticity is a dominant feature in 80% of all patients with cerebral palsy)[3] • stroke • traumatic brain injury • spinal cord injury • multiple sclerosis • hereditary spastic paraparesis • degenerative neuromuscular diseases.

متن کاملPathophysiology, Functional Implications and Management of Spasticity in Stroke – A review
The management of spasticity in stroke requires a multidisciplinary approach but more importantly, an understanding of the pathophysiology of its consequences. This paper reviews different definitions from neurophysiology and medical literature which try to place spasticity in stroke in its proper context and describes the current understanding of its pathophysiology and resultant functional im...

Spasticity is a common manifestation of many neurological conditions including multiple sclerosis, stroke, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injuries. Management of spasticity seeks to reduce its burden on patients and to limit secondary complications. Non-operative interventions including stretching/splinting, postural management, physical therapy/strengthening, anti-spas...

Spasticity is a common consequence after spinal cord injury (SCI) that affects 53-78 % of individuals with SCI (Maynard, Karunas, & Waring, 1990). Spasticity is defined as increased tonic stretch reflexes and exaggerated tendon jerks (Lance, 1980). Rehabilitation modalities, pharmacologic intervention and surgery are three main therapeutic techniques for spasticity management (Adams & Hicks, 20...
متن کاملIntraoperative Neurophysiology Monitoring During Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy for Spastic Cerebral Palsy
Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) is a neurosurgical procedure currently used as a surgical treatment of children with spasticity in their legs. In SDR, the dorsal roots from L2 to S1 or S2 is partially sectioned. The primary goal of SDR is to reduce spasticity and improve the range of movement with preservation of muscle strength. The dorsal roots involved in spasticity are identified on the ba...
